rankings tennis wta

I’m really confused about the world tennis rankings??
For example, Serena Williams won Miami just on Saturday and yet she will drop two places on the WTA rankings. This happens with other players also like Daniela Hantuchova moving down to world nine to seven. And also Tommy Haas moving from 10 to outside the top 32. I’m so confused, please tell me why??
Let me try to make this as simple as possible. The rankings are a little complicated.
Each time you win a round in a tournament, you get some points. Of course, the higher you reach in the tournament, the more points you get. Example, if I’m not mistaken, you get 1000points for winning a grand slam, but only 200points for reaching the semifinals of a grand slam. Now the points you get in this tournament will ONLY LAST UNTIL THE SAME TOURNAMENT HAPPENS AGAIN THE NEXT YEAR. So example, I win the US Open 2007. I get 1000points. I will have these 1000points until the US Open 2008 will happen. Once the US Open 2008 happens, I lose those 1000points. Now of course, since I want to get my points back, I will play in the US Open 2008. This is what it means to “defend” your points. I am the defending champion of the US Open because I was the champion last year and I want to defend my points.
Now, example I won the US Open 2007. So I get 1000points. Then by the time of US Open 2008, I want to defend my points. So I play in the tournament. I only reach the semifinals. I lose in the semifinals. I only get 200points for that tournament then. That means I just lost 800points because I wasn’t able to defend the championship. Not only that, but whoever did win US Open 2008 gets lots of points. This means that the winner could actually get a higher ranking than me, or I simply just dropped down because I lost my 800 points.
So to summarize, you get points by winning a tournament. You keep these points until after 52 weeks (or until the same tournament happens the next year).
I hope you understood it
God bless.
*btw, I did not win the US Open haha
It was just an example*
