How do different road conditions affect speed?
In NZ, The Land and Transport Safety Authority is the organisation that is in charge of the country’s roads. With co-operation from the Ministry of Transport (who make the road laws), they make sure that these laws are being followed. You are to investigate if, and how, speed is affected by different road conditions.
Aim: To investigate how different road conditions affect speed.
Hypothesis: ???
Group consists of: 3 people
Equipment: 1 pull-back action car, 3 stop-watches, 1 one-metre ruler, chalk, acess to linoleum in lab, tennis courts, grassy and paved areas, water, and papertowels.
You will need to describe step by step (eg, step one, step two, step three) how you will carry out the investigation – the more detail the better! Create a method for this investigation, using the equipment and having different sorts of jobs for the three different people.
You’re basically testing the stopping power of each type of road condition.
That means, you’re testing the friction of each type of road condition.
The pull back action car is sent over different surfaces, and you can measure how far it will travel and stop.
It might be better to let the car slide down an incline, rather than let the car be revved up.
Chalk and stop watches can measure distance and time.
Some surfaces you should try are :
Linoleum, clay, grass, dry pavement, wet pavement, icy pavement.
