Why are there so many critics of the way Serena and Venus play?

Reading this board, I see so many comments that the Williams sisters aren’t tennis players, just women who hit the ball harder than others. I mean, isn’t hitting winners part of being a good tennis player? Or would everyone rather see long rallies between two players unwilling to try actually ‘winning’ the point?

For a pair who have 18 Grand Slam singles titles, it’s amazing the criticism they take. And if they’re not really tennis players, then why can’t the “real” players beat them? I can understand their personalities being criticized, but it seems ridiculous to find so much fault with their games.
Onestep – I think your criticisms are valid. It’s the criticism of their abilities that I find startling.

With every successful athlete (and unsuccessful when they should be successful) will come criticism from people who can’t stand the fact that they are doing what they do. Serena and Venus are great players and the fact that they have 18 majors between them, says a lot about their game. I usually don’t use titles as a example for how good someone is but in this sport, it’s based off titles. The thing that baffles me about the criticism is the fact that some of it is based off their looks and personality.

This is not a beauty competition and if it was, I wouldn’t waste the time adjusting to the schedule that they play to watch tennis. I don’t care how someone looks on the court; the only question that should be going through someone’s head about a athlete is whether or not they can win. Serena and Venus have proved that when they are BOTH healthy, look out because if they make it to the second week, it’s their mistakes and lack of concentration that loses the match for them; sorry to say this but not the other players game.

Their personality shouldn’t even be a factor in what they have done. They simply are who they are. This is not a team sport and they do not have to credit ANYONE in any given moment. Crediting your opponent is nice but it is not something that is mandatory. So what if they don’t credit the opponents, why should they? Like I said, this is not a team sport and they do not have to root for anybody else to have a good performance. Plus, people don’t seem to read the TRANSCRIPT of their interviews because they do give credit to their opponents. Also, so what if they are sore losers! Who is nice and smiling when they lose? Until someone is absolutely happy that they lost something that they worked hard for, is the day that ANYONE in tennis should give their opponent credit for just beating them. I honest think that when it comes to this, it’s back to the 1950s where women were expected to be all smiles and never speaking what’s really on their mind.

I much rather see someone who speaks their mind about a situation rather than the typical, “she played a good game today”, “she gave me nothing to work against her today”. No, I want to hear “I didn’t bring my game to the court”, “I simply wasn’t at my best today and it showed”, etc. That’s the problem that people have with them, in particular with Serena, is that they f****** speak their minds and don’t care what you say, period. Serena has won every major title in the sport and is now chasing down Billie Jean and maybe (with a big emphasis on maybe) Evert and Navratilova with 18. I don’t know if she will do it but she will come damn close to it. She just has to stay healthy and adjust her game to the competitors games.

Venus has won Wimbledon 5 times and will go down as one of the best grass court players ever. What more do you want this girls to prove to you that they are simply the best at what they do? It’s not their fault that some of the “top” players are mentally unstable when it comes to the big situations. Serena wasn’t even suppose to be in the finals at Wimbledon this year because Dementiva simply outplayed her but because she is mentally off, Serena took it to a third set and beat her. How about the year when Venus was suppose to be out in the first round of Wimbledon? Things like that is what makes them the best at what they do! They can come back from situations that are clearly not in their favor (sometimes rain and other factors help).

But something interesting I read is that she (Serena) needs to win the Aussie and French Open to have a “box career slam” winning in the singles, doubles and mixed competitions. That would be cool if she did that but I highly doubt she is going to play mixed doubles anytime soon at the slams. Especially since she loves playing with her sis so much.
