College Volleyball: Playing For Scholarships

Talented high school students skilled at tennis often apply for college athletic scholarships. Many talented high school tennis players are hoping to get picked for college volleyball teams. In the U.S., a collegiate circuit which oversees the processes involved in college athletic scholarships is organized by the National Collegiate Athletics Association.

Volleyball has grown and developed ever since it was first played. One of the first changes made in volleyball was the name itself. Alfred Halstead is credited with the renaming the sport, applying the term “volley ball” to the game itself. The number of players allowable on each team also was regulated. Originally, a team could have as many players that could fit into half of a 50- by 25-foot court. The number of players was first set at nine per side, and then later further reduced to six. Rotating players to various positions on the court, however, has been part of the game from the beginning.

The first rules also allowed an unlimited number of times a team could touch the ball before it went over the net. Eventually, the number of hits was decided at a maximum of three. The earliest games which were in Morgan’s gym used the rubber bladder from the inside of a basketball. The first official volleyball was made by Spalding in 1896. In 1900, the measurements of the ball, specifically its shape and weight, were almost identical to those used today.

The height of the net was later raised to bring about more challenging plays. At present the net is set to just under eight feet for men’s matches, and just over seven feet for women’s. In the original rules, a team needed to score 21 points to win a game. The number was reduced to 15 in 1917.
