There is a fair chance Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, who plays Novak Djokovic in a re-match of their 2008 Australian Open final, might do so, for it is possible to argue that going the wrong way at Melbourne Park two years ago cost him a grand slam title.

Holding a break point at 5-all in the fourth set, an opportunity that almost certainly would have seen the final go to a deciding fifth set, the Frenchman seemingly had his Serbian rival stricken at the net when a ball lobbed up to his forehand mid-court.

Thump it cross-court and the Frenchman takes the momentum into a one-set race for the title.

Instead, history shows that Tsonga crunched it down the line and the tiring Djokovic managed a reflex volley winner before hanging on in the tiebreaker to win.

Tsonga is confident of his chances having defeated the world No 3 four successive times following the Open final before falling in the Miami Masters last year.

Asked what he had learnt since the 2008 Open final, Tsonga was not certain.

“But I beat him four times, I think, since this moment, so I learned to beat him,” Tsonga said.

Third seed Djokovic had an easy passage through the fourth round against Pole Lukasz Kubot.

Conversely Tsonga was forced to battle hard to topple Spanish seed Nicolas Almagro, eventually triumphing 9-7 in the fifth set.

But the 24-year-old from Le Mans said the experience of winning a five-set encounter would stand him in good stead and promised to take the fight up to Djokovic tonight.

“Against him, I’ll stay aggressive, very aggressive and give everything,” Tsonga said.

Djokovic is aware the Frenchman can prove almost invincible if allowed to dictate terms and said he would attempt to alter the rhythm of the match.

“Jo can beat anyone if he’s really on the roll and if he starts hitting the ball well,” Djokovic said.

“I just to have keep pressuring him and just apply my style of game, not allow him to control the match.”

The other quarter-final today is between Roger Federer and Nikolay Davydenko.

Until November, this clash would have appeared a formality.

The Swiss star, after all, had beaten Davydenko in their first 10 outings. But in the semi-finals of the Masters Cup in London, Federer flinched late in the match, allowing Davydenko to claim a 6-2 4-6 7-5 victory. Incredibly, he posted an easier victory at the start of this season in Doha, winning 6-4 6-4. Federer said the biggest difference in Davydenko was his improved serve.
