Understanding Table Tennis Rules

Ping pong is a fun sport that just about anyone can learn to play.  Enjoyed all over the world, the popularity of this game continues to grow through the years, making competitions and tournaments popular spectator sports.  Table tennis rules are easy to understand, and very similar to those of tennis.  From beginners to professionals, players of any skill level can enjoy ping pong.  Whether you want to compete or just play for fun, learning these simple rules can help improve your game.  You can also improve your skills with various instructional videos and tips from the pros.

The International Table Tennis Federation regulates the rules of ping pong.  Standard table tennis rules are relatively easy to follow and understand.  A regulation table is 9 feet by 5 feet by 30 inches high.  This standard is followed all over the world in both professional and recreational matches.  A regulation match follows an 11 point scoring system.  The first player to reach 11 points, and at least 2 points ahead of the opponent, wins the match.  Serves in the match are alternated by each player every 2 points.  If the game reaches a tie at 10-10, players will alternate serves every other point.

Points are awarded any number of ways.  If a player allows the ball to bounce more than once or double hits the ball, a point is awarded to the opponent.  According to table tennis rules, if a player hits the ball with anything other than the racket, the opponent scores a point.  It is also unacceptable to place a hand on the table.  A point is awarded to the opponent if the racket or any other part of the body hits the net as well.  It’s easy enough to learn all the rules of regulation play.

Other things play a role in the rules of the game as well.  Things like regulation ball and racket size are also important and easy to understand.  Ping pong is a fun game that can be enjoyed by anyone, no matter what his or her skill level might be.  Learning the game and understanding table tennis rules will help you have fun in matches, whether they are recreational or competitive.  From point scoring to regulation table size, there are many things that play a part in the standards of the game.  This fast paced game is fun to learn and even more fun to play.
