Search Engine Ranking Optimization – 8 Steps to Success

For a search engine ranking optimization program to be successful you must implement the following 8 steps:

Select a Profitable Target Market
A market can be defined as a group of people who share a common interest or activity. Tennis, for example is a market. A niche is a subset of the overall market focused more narrowly, like tennis equipment. A micro niche will further sub-divide the niche, it is a niche of a niche. In our example it could be tennis racquets, tennis shoes, or tennis balls. For search engine ranking purposes it is more productive to identify a micro niche as a target.

Conduct Keyword Research
When searching for information on the Internet, members of a market type in words or phrases into the search engines. These are the keywords that must be identified to build a website around. You need to learn to conduct keyword research to find those words or phrases that apply to the micro niche you are exploring. You select keywords for your chosen market that have the right balance between number of searches and competition for those search terms.

Learn About the Competition
You need traffic to your website in order to be successful. Acceptable traffic requires a first page ranking when the search engines return their results. Only 10 websites appear on the first page. So a profitable keyword will have a level of competition that would allow a first page ranking to be earned. Competition takes two forms; 1) how many websites are competing for your targeted keywords and 2) the strength of the competition. If there are too many sites trying for the same keyword phrase it will be hard to earn a first page ranking. Even a keyword phrase with an appropriate level of competition may not prove to be successful if the page 1 websites are extremely strong. There must be at least one weak competitor on the first page that you could knock off.

Design and Create a Website/Blog
When planning a new website or blog you should take into account search engine ranking optimization from the beginning. Your design should be keyword rich as it pertains to your micro niche. The domain name should contain the keyword, this is critical for earning a high ranking.

Create Relevant Content
The information on your website must address the search terms that the micro niche member types in. If your target keyword phrase is Head tennis racquets, but your content focuses on the broader market of tennis, you will frustrate your visitors by not offering relevant content. Your content will also be analyzed by the search engines to measure how well it matches your keywords. If your content is not relevant you will not rank high.

Create Back Links
Search engines consider back links as in their formula for determining how to rank your website. Simply, a back link occurs any time that another website links to your website through click-able words (anchor text). If you receive back links from other relevant websites then this will help your overall ranking.

Become a Subject Matter Authority
To be successful long term you need to build market leadership. You and/or your website needs to be perceived as a subject matter expert in the micro niche. You create subject matter expertise by producing relevant content on a consistent basis. You write blog posts for your site, you author articles that are published on other relevant websites with back links back to your site. You can use social media to gain a following by providing great content.

Perform Site Analysis
You must measure how well your site is doing in order to be successful. Learn what tools are available to help you understand where you rank with the search engines, how much traffic is coming to your website and where that traffic is originating from. Measure your conversion rates. Know how many people click on your offer and ultimately do what you want them to do.
